A Socio-Medical Survey on the Rural Area in Kyunggi Province.


Abstract
A socio-medical survey was conducted by the author from November 20 to Decemb" 30, 1962 on 3,756 agricultural households in Kyunggi Province, Korea, in respect of the population, education and religion, clothing, food and nutrition, housing, sanitary facilities, smoking and drinking, fuel and family planning, has led to the following conclusions:
1. Male apd female population under the age of 15 make up 50.45% and 40.13% respectively of the total population. The Sex-ratio is 90 against 100. The age of householders was in the forties of 28.6% and the thirties of 28.2%. The average population per household is 5.61 persons and the population per house is 6.47 persons.
The age at marriage of householders was in the age of 21 to 25 of 40.93%, 16 to 20 of 37.28%, 26 to 30 of 15.28% respectively.
2. In the educational career of the householders, the primary school graduates was 44.9% and no attendents was 17.1%. Those who have religion of any kind ccmFri_e 17.67% of the total householders, 42.3% thereof being Christians.
3. Number of clothing: the most of them has 2 suits by season, that is, 43% of Spring and Autumn, 29.55% of Summer suits and 43.35% of Winter suits respectively.
4. The times of meals per day of them was 3- times daily in the most; by season, 95.23% in Spring, 90-73% in Summer, 93.37% in Autumn and 91.00% in Winter.
The contents of main food was Rice and Barley of 21.78% in Spring, barley of 32.80% in Summer, rice of 39.30% in Autumn and rice and miscellaneous grains of 35.20% in Winter.
Beef is consumed by 82.75% of the total households, each consuming an average of 4.92 Keuns per year. Pork is consumed by 86.02% of the total households, each consuming 6.71 K,euns per year. Chicken is consumed by 43.19% of the total_ households, each consuming an average number of 3.70 per year. Fish is consumed by 77.90% of the whole households, each taking 11.24 times per year.
5. In housing condition, 91.05% of them has their own houses but the other 8.95% are renting. The materials for roof of house consists of straw in 80.40%, soil-tile in 14.96% and galvanized iron in 2.69%. Average number of room per household was 2.40. Of the total space of house,
20 Pyongs, 37-51% of less than 10 Pyongs and 11.09% of 21 to 30 Pyongs respectively.
Of the space of room, 36.34/ of 3 to 4 Pyongs, 27.34% of 5 to 6 Pyongs and 14.28% of less than 2 Pyongs respectively.
The households of 90.36/0 of them has their kitchens with 2.56,Pyongs in average per household.
68.39% of them has their wooden floor and the space of wooden floor was 58.18% of less than 2 Pyongs and 30.23% of 3 to 4 Pyongs.
The households of 44.54% of them has their storehouse and the space of storehouse was 50.39% of less than 2 Pyongs.
6. The house of 48-11% them has private wells but the others using public wells.
Status of toilet: 95.77% of them has toilet and 79.93¢¥/ of which was used for one household only.
7. The householder who can drink was 67.81% of which 77.54% of them used to drink an un-refined "Sool". 80.83% of them was smoker.
The households of 74.65% of them used of wood and 25.35/ of briquette as fuel.
8. Family planning is supported by 67.97% but only 35.44% are in practice.
